Western Foundations & Shoring, Inc. was contracted by Kitchell Contractors to design and construct a temporary shoring system to support the basement excavation of the new Scripps Mercy MD Anderson Cancer Center for Scripps Heath in San Diego, California.

The design-build system for this new building consisted of 8,300 square feet of soldier piles, timber lagging, tiebacks, and pipe braces. Our services included detailed coordination with the earthwork subcontractor to design a haul ramp capable of supporting heavy haul trucks. We designed this temporary shoring system to accommodate the concrete subcontractor’s service crane and concrete pump surcharge loads. One major challenge for this project was coordination with San Diego Gas & Electric (SDG&E) for installation of tieback anchors within 5 feet of a high-pressure gas line.  We worked alongside SDG&E personnel to prepare a detailed installation statement, including pot holing utility prior to drilling and scheduling gas stand-by personnel. As a result, our tieback anchor installation was performed perfectly without delay to the project schedule.

The Owner desired a large observation deck along backside of existing General Store Building to provide customers a serene lake environment for dining and lounging.  We drilled 30” diameter piers from 17’ to 27’ deep on a 3:1 sloping bank reaching 15’ out over existing lake.  Drilling wasn’t easy, we encountered wet soft caving silts “lake bottom deposits”, nested cobbles and boulders and hard “Friars Formation” sandstone/siltstone.  Piers positioned in the lake required permanent full-length galvanized steel casing with epoxy coated reinforcing steel.  The piers were formed up to 12’ above existing grade for deck beams.  Careful coordination was required to maintain tight tolerances (1/4” plan and elevation) provided by deck fabricator.  This drilled shaft construction project was completed a week ahead of schedule through the rainy season while working in a difficult environmental setting.  Another difficult drilled pier construction project was successfully completed at Western Foundations & Shoring.

The Homeowners of this custom backyard wanted a nice large pool with a beautiful view of the lake in Alpine, CA. The pool caissons ranged in size from 24″, 30″, 36″ and 42″ diameter with various depths. We encountered difficult caisson drilling conditions with large boulders, hard rock lenses and groundwater. The shafts were extremely close to the lake which increased the difficulty of holding back the water. Steel Casings were used for temporary support and concrete was pumped to the bottom of the shaft while the water was pumped off the top into a tank. Several of the caissons were carefully formed above grade with column form and stripped upon curing of the 4,000 psi concrete.

This particular project had tough drilling conditions while reaching over an existing wall to install the soldier beams for shoring. This temporary shoring wall project was considered a remodel since 50% of the walls were remaining intact. The existing stud walls had to remain in place throughout the course of construction. Our design and construction team worked collectively constructing this temporary shoring wall to support the adjacent properties during the excavation and construction of a large basement addition. The residential shoring system consisted of cantilevered soldier piles with timber lagging installed in dense soil with large cobbles.

The Owners of this custom project wanted a nice large pool with a beautiful view of the La Jolla coast. The caissons were various sizes from 24″ to 48″ diameter with various depths through difficult drilling conditions. We encountered large boulders and hard lenses in the soil. The caissons were formed above grade with column form up to 8′ above grade. The long reach drill attachment was perfect for reaching down the slope of the hill.

The Geotechnical Engineers did not approve of the existing site soils for new construction. Therefore, drilled shafts were placed in various locations and backfilled with concrete to provide a firm foundation. The smaller size drill rig used on the project was economical and efficient.

This residential project located in La Jolla required small access equipment and we had the perfect size drill rig to get the job done. There were 12 caissons 24″ diameter by various depths for a retaining wall and future deck support. Custom drilling needed to be performed in 2 phases due to the limited access.

Our design and construction team worked collectively constructing this temporary shoring and underpinning system to support an existing historic house and adjacent properties during the excavation and construction of a 7,000 square foot basement addition. The residential shoring system consisted of cantilevered soldier piles with timber lagging installed in caving wet sands/silts/clays. The underpinning system was comprised of a series of columns, support beams, and channels holding a small wing of the historic house above the excavation to create access into the new basement addition. There were many challenges defeated by our experienced field crews including but not limited to: access constraints into the backyard, working with prestigious neighbors to maintain good relations, mysteries of a historic house, shallow groundwater table, and dewatering complications in clay layers.

Our expert team designed a temporary shoring system consisting of soldier piles, timber lagging and tieback anchors to support existing active passenger/freight railroad traffic during construction of a replacement bridge. We encountered many obstacles during the design and construction of this temporary shoring project. Challenges experienced during this bridge shoring project included implementing specific railroad design/loading requirements, employee background checks for base access, railroad specific training for all employees, limited working windows due to active railroad traffic, unforeseen soil conditions and buried debris from the original bridge construction. Our experienced staff overcame all these obstacles and completed another successful solder pile shoring project while adding another satisfied client to our list.

This temporary shoring installation project had very limited access with low overhead restrictions and limited width entry. We designed a unique shoring system to facilitate installation and safe working conditions. This shoring construction project for UCSD was performed on schedule with no damage to any existing pipes or equipment. See more examples of our shoring services here.
